A Novel Porous Diamond - Titanium Biomaterial: Structure, Microstructure, Physico-Mechanical Properties and Biocompatibility Anais da ABC (AABC)

ABSTRACT With the aim of introducing permanent prostheses with main properties equivalent to cortical human bone, Ti-diamond composites were processed through powder metallurgy. Grade 1 titanium and mixtures of Ti powder with 2%, 5% and 10 wt% diamond were compacted at 100MPa, and then sintered at 1250°C/2hr/10-6mbar. Sintered samples were studied in the point of view of their microstructures, structures, yield strength and elastic modulus. The results showed that the best addition of diamonds was 2 wt%, which led to a uniform porosity, yield strength of 370MPa and elastic modulus of 13.9 GPa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the calcium dosage of the newly formed bone, in critical bone defects created on the calvarial tissue and filled by different substances, in male Wistar rats. In this work, biocompatibility, osteointegration, osteoconductivity, and biodegradation of a hydroxyapatite polyhydroxybutyrate new composite were evaluated. The composite was implanted in rabbits' bone defects and clinical, radiographic, histological, and histomorphometric data of these animals were compared with those of unfilled defects on the days 8th, 45th, and 90th after surgery. No significant differences existed between the groups for the evaluated clinical parameters. Radiographs showed bone-composite direct contact. Rising prices and uncertain supplies of petroleum, together with environmental concerns regarding fossil fuel combustion, has enhanced interest in biobased products and fuels. The work reported here analyzes the feasibility of a multi-product biorefinery using wheat straw as feedstock that produces ethanol, electricity, and cellulose nanofibers. The nanofibers (nanowhiskers) would be used as reinforcements in a biobased nanocomposite material that could substitute for fiberglass in many applications. The analysis indicates that, at 2005 prices and costs, the biorefinery would be marginally profitable. Anticipated advances in bioprocessing technology would enhance profitability. Histological Evaluation of Bone Regeneration Means Freeze Dried Bone Allograft (FDBA) in Post Exodontia Sockets International Journal of Morphology

Within oral rehabilitation alveolar ridge preservation following extraction is important. This research study shows a histological, histochemical and histomorphometrical evaluation in two cases of post extraction ridge-socket preservation performed with FDBA. In two patients dental extraction procedures were performed and sockets were immediately filled with FDBA. Six months later a biopsy of grafted area was obtained and rehabilitated through dental implant. Grafted bone samples were treated for histological and histochemical analysis. Main biological and synthetic materials applied in abdominal wall reconstructive surgeries in Veterinary Medicine: literature review MV&Z

Researches for the ideal material for abdominal wall reconstructive procedures in Veterinary Medicine remains constant. Synthetic and biological materials are routinely studied, regarding the ability of abdominal support and reactivity of the host, both of them present advantages and disadvantages. This review analyzes the main characteristics of synthetic and biological materials currently in use, in order to compare the two of them. It was observed that biological materials have less reactivity by the host, but the strength of the synthetic materials is higher, even though, more expensive. The effort and research for the ideal material should remain active because the ideal one has not been found yet.

Medical applications of shape memory alloys BJMBR

Shape memory alloys (SMA) are materials that have the ability to return to a former shape when subjected to an appropriate thermomechanical procedure. Pseudoelastic and shape memory effects are some of the behaviors presented by these alloys. The unique properties concerning these alloys have encouraged many investigators to look for applications of SMA in different fields of human knowledge. The purpose of this review article is to present a brief discussion of the thermomechanical behavior of SMA and to describe their most promising applications in the biomedical area. These include cardiovascular and orthopedic uses, and surgical instruments.

Biobased products and fuels appear to have a very bright future. A consortium led by NDSU is currently engaged in a project that would use cellulose nanofibers derived from wheat straw to make a product that could substitute for fiberglass and plastics in many applications, including automotive parts. The work described here analyzes the economic value of producing cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) as a co-product in an ethanol biorefinery. An ASPEN Plus-based process model was developed to evaluate ethanol production from wheat straw. The base case model generated 54.418 million gallons per year (MGPY) of denatured ethanol, using approximately 900,000 tons per year of wheat straw feedstock. Properties of films obtained from biopolymers of different origins for skin lesions therapy BABT

In this study, the effects of the origin of xanthan used, in combination with chitosan, to prepare films for the treatment of skin lesions were evaluated. The characteristics of the films obtained with xanthan commercially available for the food industry sector and xanthan originated from a fermentation process conducted in a pilot plant were compared. Results showed that the source did not strongly interfere in many of the properties of the films, such as the mechanical properties, cytotoxicity to L929 cells, absorption of simulated body fluid and culture medium, stability in water and saline solution.
